Dr. Hall-Findlay uses photographic documentation to help discuss patient concerns. On occasion, after the consultation is completed and the patient has returned home, certain issues may come up that warrant further discussion.
These photographs can then be used to discuss any other concerns with a subsequent telephone call. Computer imaging (the image is altered to give the patient an idea of what may or may not be achieved with surgery) is valuable only for patients interested in nasal surgery (rhinoplasty).

Packages: Breast Reduction
Dr. Hall-Findlay uses a method for breast reduction,
which reduces scarring. Most techniques for breast
reduction involve an anchor shaped scar which goes
around the areola, down to the fold and from side to
side along the fold or crease under the breast.
Dr. Hall-Findlay has adapted the European method of breast reduction surgery to
provide a shorter scar, which just goes around the areola and down to the fold.
This scar is shaped more like a squash racquet or a "lollipop". Dr. Hall-Findlay
believes that the added benefits of this procedure are the improved shape and the
reduced recovery time for the patient.
Breast Augmentation (Implants)
Patients who desire larger breasts have various types of implants from which to
choose. The most common type is a saline filled implant, but silicone gel filled
implants are again available. The concerns about health and implants proved not
to be an issue.
Dr. Hall-Findlay will provide all the information necessary to make an informed
decision. There are various incisions available and some patients prefer to have
the implant placed above the muscle and some below. Patients are an active
participant in choosing which options (including no surgery at all!) are best for
them.
Breast Uplift (Mastopexy)
Occasionally patients will need a breast uplift with or without breast augmentation.
Dr. Hall-Findlay has been able to adapt the reduced scarring methods that she
uses in breast reduction to the breast uplift patient. She will review the advantages
and disadvantages of using implants at the same time as a mastopexy.
Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia)
Male breast reduction can be achieved through a combination of liposuction and
excision. When there is glandular tissue present, direct excision will be necessary
with liposuction being used for shaping. If the extra breast tissue is mainly fat,
then liposuction alone can achieve a good result.
It is important in teenagers to wait until some of the puberty hormones have
settled. Although it may be difficult to wait, protruding breasts in teenage boys
usually do go away with time. When the tissue is persistent, then it may be
worthwhile going ahead with surgery in spite of the scars scars that are usually
confined to the lower border of the areola. But scars do occasionally show enough
that they can be noticed.
Blepharoplasty
Upper eyelid blepharoplasty: This is sometimes
described as an "eyelid lift". It doesnt actually "lift" the
eyelids, but it opens them up so that patients look less
tired. The surgery is relatively simple; it is performed
under local anesthesia as a day procedure.
Bruising can last for one - two weeks; the healing
process is usually uneventful.
Lower eyelid blepharoplasty: This can be performed with or without a skin incision,
depending on the problem that needs to be solved. Dr. Hall-Findlay believes in a
"conservative" approach to give patients as much improvement as possible without
causing any downturn of the lid itself.
Browlift
The browlift procedure raises the eyebrows and tidies up the skin around the outer
aspects of the eyes. The forehead creases can be improved along with some of the
frowning lines. There are two ways to perform a browlift: the standard "coronal" lift
and the newer "endoscopic" lift. There are reasons to choose one over the other and
Dr. Hall-Findlay will review these options with each patient.
Necklift
There are various approaches to correcting neck problems. Sometimes just
liposuction of the neck area is all that is indicated. Some others will need a true
"necklift" where a small incision is made under the chin and the muscles are
repositioned and the hanging skin corrected.
Facelift
Many patients desire just a necklift procedure, but the only way to give a good
correction to the neck area is to perform a full facelift. This is more extensive
surgery with not only a scar under the chin but also scars in front of and behind both
ears. The goal is to give a "natural" look without any telltale signs of surgery. The
key is to reposition and tighten the inelastic layers under the skin rather than pulling
too hard on the skin itself. Although facelift surgery can give dramatic results it can
involve more surgery than patients are prepared for.
Rhinoplasty
Correction of nasal shape is probably the only procedure for which computer
imaging can help communication between Dr. Hall-Findlay and the patient. It can
often be just as important to find out what cannot be achieved, as it is to get an idea
of what can be achieved. The various maneuvers involved will be discussed with
each patient and a printout of the "desired" goal will be given to each patient.
Chin implant
For some patients considering facial or nose surgery, the result can be enhanced
with a chin implant. The approach is made either through the inside of the mouth or
through a small incision made under the chin.
Otoplasty
Otoplasty (ear pinning) is usually performed around kindergarten or first grade.
When children are teased in school the surgery can make a huge difference in
self esteem. Often these children will have the surgery over spring or summer
break and no one remembers that the childs ears used to stick out. No one calls
them "Dumbo" any more. It is true about much of plastic surgery that the goal is
to remove what is obvious and other people forget what they do not see.
Because this surgery can make such a difference, most provincial health care
plans will cover the costs for children (who find the surgery much easier than their
parents).
The surgery can be just as rewarding for adults. Whereas children have the surgery
performed under a full general anesthetic, adults are often awake with some
sedation.
Patients need to wear a head band for a week (and not washing their hair seems to
be the biggest drawback!) While there may be some discomfort and bruising, the
sutures used "dissolve" and do not need to be removed.
Liposuction
Suction assisted lipectomy or liposuction is used for
shaping as well as reduction of localized fat deposits.
It is not performed for weight loss. In fact, many of Dr.
Hall-Findlays patients are marathon runners! no
one can accuse them of either being overweight or
out of shape. Liposuction works best for patients who
have a genetic "maldistribution" of fat.
There are two myths first that the fat comes back and second, that the fat
goes elsewhere. As long as patients maintain their body weight, neither of these
will be true.
Dr. Hall-Findlay performs this surgery with a full general anesthetic not under
local. She prefers to have the patients completely asleep so that she can
maximize the possible improvement. Liposuction is usually used for the inner and
outer thighs, the inner knees, the hip roll areas and the abdominal wall.
Abdominoplasty
For patients where the problem is actually excess skin in the abdomen,
liposuction will not be indicated. The excess skin itself needs to be removed. This
procedure is often called a "tummy tuck", but this name is misleading. It can be
fairly extensive surgery that involves a scar from hip to hip and around the navel.
Dr. Hall-Findlay will review photographs so that each patient can better understand
the choices and which procedure may be best in their particular circumstance.
